Alfie’s Grandma lives in the country and all around her house there are some great places for exploring. At the bottom of her garden there is a little pond with goldfish living in it, and beyond that a gate which leads into the field where Alfie and Dad once camped out.

One hot afternoon Alfie and Mum set out on an adventure. They went exploring to the bottom of the field, where they found a stream. They waded in, scrambling over rocks and fallen branches and getting very wet, until at last they came to a secret grassy place all overhung with trees, where one little apple tree was growing. Mum said it was like the Garden of Eden.

They stayed there for a long while, and saw a little brownish green snake swimming in the water. Alfie never forgot that magical time and place.
